They're Doing to America What They Executed to Christianity

Trumpism's most illuminating and distinctive occasions – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of several weeks, the US president commenced revealing all observers his designs for a lavish reception room double the dimensions than the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance is 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study projected his energy policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have dared – genuinely, no former commander would have conceived – solo demolishing major areas of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' into 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense regarding him because they identify as non-believers or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably definitely not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to another nation to avoid secret police. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for others, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and housing. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a means to teach the attacker; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing as well.

The apparent and straightforward truth that Christ from scripture advocates for a form of extreme compassion centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the populace, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Finest Within Us

Hence I have become heartened to see the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided substantial consolation to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the best parts of American history.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or not?

The nation is most protected, in other words, by reference to the best in US heritage, just as Christianity is best defended by reference to that which renders it distinctive and wonderful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In both situations does it mean pretending the worst regarding America and religious tradition did not happen; it means both humility and conviction, a mixture that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
