Entire Career of Earnings Insufficient for UK Workers to Enter Richest 10%, Report Reveals

According to new analysis, the typical earner in the UK would need half a century of salary to reach the wealth level of the most affluent 10% nationwide.

Expanding Wealth Gap Through the Years

The study analyzed wealth distribution information from the 2020-22 timeframe and determined that during the mid-2000s, it would have needed 38 years' worth of median full-time earnings to reach the richest segment of the economic ladder.

A research lead part of the report stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are presently so substantial that a regular employee saving all their earnings during their working years would still not be able to reach the top of the economic scale."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The study found that the gap between the wealth of the median citizen and a person belonging to the wealthiest decile was one million pounds in the mid-2000s, but had expanded to £1.3 million in actual value by 2020-22.

The analyst added: "These gaps are doubly concerning as economic movement in Britain is low – individuals who begin life affluent tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Although the wealth gap expanding in actual numbers, the share of total wealth in the UK possessed by the wealthiest families – called "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s era," according to the research.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK increased dramatically from triple the gross domestic product, to approximately 7.5x.

Contributors of Economic Disparity

Referred to as "automatic" gains, by means of increasing property values and variations in pension valuations, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide since 2010, per the analysis.

These appreciations typically went to elderly homeowners, the analysis reveals – exacerbating the intergenerational wealth divide.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The average wealth gap between people in their early 30s and sixty-somethings increased over twofold in inflation-adjusted terms, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Regional Differences

There were also stark regional variations, with the average level of net worth in recent years standing at £290,000 in the SE of England, where property prices have tended to rise rapidly, versus £110k in the NE of England.

COVID Era Effects

During the pandemic, when millions of workers were supported by the government-supported job retention program, and health crisis restrictions reduced expenditure possibilities, the information reveals numerous families were capable of accumulating, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes fared much better, though. "The typical family in the lowest-income quintile saw their available funds grow by only eighty pounds throughout the health crisis (2019-20 to 2021-22), roughly identical to the pre-crisis period. In contrast, the median home in the top income bracket saw their available funds rise by £4,200," the report finds.
